Gamers' thumbs should be twitching in anticipation, as Microsoft has officially named the date it'll be unveiling its new Xbox.

The follow-up to the hugely popular Xbox 360 will be getting an official airing on 21 May, invites sent from Microsoft specify.

The invite gives little away, but promises "a new generation revealed", which is as close to confirmation of a new console as we're likely to get from the software giant.

"Don Mattrick and the Xbox team invite you to the Xbox campus for a special unveiling," the minimalist invite continues.

With less than one month to go until we get a glimpse at what Microsoft has been cooking up, our tech-addled minds are turning to the new features that will be crammed into the company's next fun-box. If you have any good ideas, stick 'em in the comments.

Unfortunately, one leaked bit of info suggests the next Xbox will force gamers to spend time installing new titles onto the console, making for potentially boring stretches of staring at the screen come Christmas morn'.

Console manufacturers normally use the E3 gaming conference in June to show off new hardware, but Sony has already ditched that tradition, debuting the PlayStation 4 at a bespoke event in February.
