It's been two weeks since the launch of Grand Theft Auto V, and now the incredibly ambitious multiplayer component — GTA Online — is set to drop this evening.

To get access to GTA Online, you'll need to download the Title Update from either the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live, depending on your preferred flavour of gaming.

That update, according to Rockstar, should be available starting from 9pm AEST tonight, 1 October.

With just hours to go until launch, Rockstar has also given out a little additional information on GTA Online.

In terms of how it fits into the world of GTA V, the multiplayer action is "set a few months prior to the events of Grand Theft Auto V’s single-player story".

There are also security systems in play for when other characters visit your virtual homes and garages. Rockstar says it has:

... designed house party invitations specifically to be a friendly social affair where players can visit each other’s pads without fear of having them ruined or losing their hard-earned vehicles in the process. If someone invites you into their property, then it is considered a friendly visit and you will not be able to shoot up their place or steal their cars from their garage.

Finally, the "hereditary-based character generation" system seems like one of the more unusual details we've encountered.

Choose your gender then decide on your mother and father. From there, you can choose to give one parent genetic dominance or leave them more evenly matched. The choice is yours. Next, you adjust a set of lifestyle variables, which help determine your character’s appearance and starting stats.
