'Game of Thrones' wins Emmy for best drama, makes history
The hit HBO fantasy series has now scored more Emmys than any prime-time TV show.
Winter may be coming later than expected for "Game of Thrones" fans this year, but the show itself got a huge dose of sunshine Sunday night when it won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.
That award tipped the hit show into record-setting territory, as it's now scored more Emmys than any prime-time TV show.
The HBO epic took home the Outstanding Drama Series prize for the second year in a row, along with trophies for both writing and directing for a drama series. By the end of the night, the show had collected three Emmys and broken the record for most Emmy-awarded program of all time with 38 total wins (breaking the previous record of 37, held by "Frasier"). The show fell just two awards short of breaking the record set by "John Adams" for most awarded program in a single year.
The Emmy shower comes just after "Game of Thrones" announced it would push back its production schedule for its shortened seventh season. The later production date, and thus the later premiere, will put the show out of contention for next year's awards.
That gap opens a lot of doors for series that were previously overlooked. "The Americans" managed to grab a surprising, but very deserving, nomination in the drama category this year, along with acting nods for its leads Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. With "Game of Thrones" out of the way next year, "The Americans" could return to take the top prize, which would be a first drama series trophy for FX.
This summer at the Television Critics Association fall preview, HBO announced that "Game of Thrones" will officially end with season 8. The network's president of programming, Casey Bloys, said HBO would "take 10 seasons if we could," but show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been adamant that 8 seasons was the right number.
At the time, Bloys said a spinoff isn't out of the question.
"We've talked about it. I am certainly not opposed to it," he said. "There are no concrete plans for it at this point."
