General Dynamics has chosen computers from high-end computer maker SGI for use in a U.S. Navy air-defense system. The setup is designed to help Navy officials plan defense strategies by simulating missile engagements on a digital, 3D battlefield map. General Dynamics is purchasing a 32-processor Origin 3400 server, four Onyx 3000 graphics systems, eight Octane2 visualization computers, and an O2+ graphics workstation. Computers for the Area Air Defense Commander Capability system have been installed on the U.S.S. Mount Whitney command-and-control ship and on the U.S.S. Shiloh cruiser, SGI said. Further systems will be installed on 17 other Navy sites and ships.
