SBC offers broadband discount

Service provider is offering a lower rate to customers who sign up online for high-speed DSL access this month.

SBC Communications on Tuesday announced a discount for customers who sign up online for high-speed Internet access.

Home customers who sign up for the SBC Yahoo DSL Express Package online in March will get the service for $19.95 a month for one year, the Baby Bell said. They will have to sign a one-year contract, however, and also sign up for SBC's local phone service.

Previously, customers could only get this rate if they also signed up for SBC's All Distance local and long-distance calling plan for $48.95 a month.

The offer is available to new customers only, an SBC representative said.

The companies' Express Service has digital subscriber line speeds of up to 1.5 megabits per second.

SBC said customers who sign up for DSL will also be able to use the FreedomLink Wi-Fi service at no charge until May 31.

The service provider had recently cut prices of its fastest DSL service bundled with the All Distance plan.

"Our move to further encourage customers to do business with us over the Web is an obvious win-win," Scott Helbing, senior vice president at SBC, said in a statement. "For SBC companies, we're lowering our cost of doing business while increasing customer satisfaction."
