Multimedia system beats $2,000

Micron Electronics announces a fully loaded multimedia PC priced under $1,900 that will use a new chipset from Intel.

Micron Electronics (MUEI) today announced a fully loaded multimedia PC priced under $1,900 that will use a new chipset from Intel.

Micron says the Millenia Mme system will be aimed at consumers and small offices, heavy users of multimedia applications. The Mme will use Intel's new 82430TX chipset, which allows for the use of Synchronous DRAM. SDRAM, which speeds system performance by allowing processors to access information in main memory more quickly.

Other features of the Millenia Mme include a 200-MHz Pentium processor with MMX, 16MB of SDRAM, a 100MB Zip drive, a 16X CD-ROM drive, and a 2.1GB hard drive. The system also ships with two USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports. USB is a high-speed connection for PC peripheral equipment such as printers and digital cameras. Microsoft's Office 97 and Adobe Photo Deluxe for retouching photographs are among the software titles included.

Micron says the system, which ships with a 15-inch monitor, will be priced starting at $1,899, depending on configuration. Systems are currently available.
