IBM centralizes telco management

IBM will combine its specialized management software for telecommunications networks with Tivoli's TME 10 platform.

IBM (IBM) will soon offer telecommunications firms management tools that can be viewed from the popular TME 10 platform of Big Blue subsidiary Tivoli Systems.

IBM intends to announce next week that its Support Facility software tool set for telecommunications management networks (TMN) will be integrated with Tivoli's overarching management platform, offering administrators of far-flung carrier layouts a single console for control of resources.

Telecommunications networks need specialized run-time software for monitoring and management due to their constant up-time.

The announcement is the latest move in a long-running effort by IBM and Tivoli to combine management software where appropriate. IBM purchased Tivoli a little over a year ago for $750 million.
