HP slashes notebook prices

Hewlett-Packard is cutting prices on its Omnibook 5500 notebook series up to 21 percent.

Hewlett-Packard (HWP) announced today that it is cutting prices on its Omnibook 5500 notebook series up to 21 percent.

HP said the price cut will make the notebooks more competitive against other Pentium laptops on the market because all models offer PCI architecture for enhanced system performance.

For the entry-level 5500 CS with 100-MHz Pentium processor, 16MB of memory and 11.3-inch dual-scan display, retail prices are expected to be as low as $1,530. The old price was $1,795; the price cut is 15 percent.

The top-of-the-line 5500 CT with 133-MHz Pentium processor, 16MB of memory, and 12.1-inch active matrix display has a new estimated retail price of $3,510, about 19 percent less than the old $4,320 tag.

HP also cut the price on its Omnibook 800 CT from $3,800 to $3,400. All prices are effective immediately, though they may differ outside the United States.
