Companies release storage benchmark

After years of work, the Storage Performance Council has completed work on a way to standardize measurement of data-storage systems. The performance benchmark measures how fast a storage system can read and write information. The council was founded in 1988, but the top seller of high-end systems, EMC, withdrew in March 2000, arguing that the benchmark didn't reflect EMC's market or the advantages of its technology. The council's steering committee includes representatives from Sun Microsystems, Hitachi Data Systems, LSI Logic Storage Systems, IBM and Veritas.
