Caterpillar taps IBM, i2 for software

Construction and mining equipment maker Caterpillar said Friday that it will use software and services from IBM and i2 Technologies to enable its suppliers to manage tasks such as inventory, ordering and fulfillment processes online. Caterpillar said its suppliers will have access to IBM consulting and integration services and to i2's supply chain management software. IBM will also provide hardware, Web hosting services and middleware, which is software that manages communication between a client program and a database. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
