iPhone 5 leaps to Cricket on September 28
The no-contract carrier will be joining the fray early on, just a week after it's available to Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint customers.
Apple's iPhone 5 won't be limited to Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint customers. You'll be able to get a prepaid version, too, via Cricket.
Cricket, a Leap Wireless subsidiary, announced today that it'll start selling the iPhone 5 on September 28, exactly one week after the device is made available to U.S. customers on major carrier networks.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 yesterday. The device comes with a host of improvements and changes, including a 4-inch display, 4G LTE, and a new dock connector called Lightning. Apple says that the smartphone will be available on Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint networks in the U.S. Based on Cricket's announcement, it appears it'll also be coming to smaller, regional networks, as well.
Cricket and Apple teamed up on the iPhone 4S earlier this year. Cricket offers no-contract plans. For iPhone owners, that means paying a significant premium on Apple's handsets -- the 16GB iPhone 4S, for example, costs $499.99 on Cricket's service, compared to $199 with a two-year agreement.
There's no word as yet on Cricket's iPhone 5 pricing. However, considering the iPhone 5 is priced the same as the iPhone 4S on major carrier networks, it's likely the same will be true for Cricket.
