$100 OLPC tablet to debut at CES
The XO 3.0 tablet from the One Laptop Per Child project will debut at CES, featuring some novel technology. All for less than $100.
One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) will show a $100 tablet at CES, a follow-on to the organization's low-cost laptop, which has been distributed to over 2 million children globally.
OLPC's mission is to provide one connected laptop or tablet to children who have little or no access to education because of insufficient resources.
"We're proud to introduce the XO 3.0 tablet, showcasing the design, durability and performance features that make it a natural successor for our current laptops, which have been distributed to more than 2.4 million children in 42 countries and in 25 languages," said Edward McNierney, chief technology officer of One Laptop per Child, in a statement.
Units, which feature an 8-inch screen, will be shown at CES. Pricing is slated to be under $100.
The XO 3.0 integrates a 1GHZ Marvell Armada PXA618 system-on-a-chip, delivering low power consumption at low cost.
"Partnering with One Laptop Per Child is one way...to benefit children in some of the poorest places on the planet," said Tom Hayes, vice president of corporate marketing at Marvell and a member of the OLPC advisory board.
Other features of the Wi-Fi capable tablet include:
• Circuitry that allows it to be charged directly by solar panels or hand cranks.
• A Pixel Qi sunlight-readable display.
• Eight to ten hours of battery life.
• Android and Linux operating system support.
The OLPC laptop became available in September of 2007.
