Intel's Bryant set to become chairman
Intel says Andy Bryant has become vice chairman and will become its new chairman in May of next year.
Intel said today that former chief financial officer Andy Bryant will become its new chairman in May 2012.
In preparation for this move, Intel's board of directors elected Bryant as vice chairman of the board, a new position. He will serve alongside the current chairman, Jane Shaw, until she retires from the board next May, Intel said in a statement Tuesday.
Bryant joined Intel in 1981 and later served as chief financial officer for 13 years and more recently as executive vice president responsible for the Technology and Manufacturing Group and then as chief administrative officer. Prior to joining Intel, he held positions in finance at Ford Motor and Chrysler.
Bryant is considered Intel's resident polymath, whose breath of knowledge of the chipmaker's various operations is rivaled by few, if any, other executives.
He is the second Intel officer to serve on the current board, in addition to CEO Paul Otellini. "When Bryant becomes executive chairman, the board will concurrently re-establish the position of lead director to be held by an independent, non-employee director," Intel said.
Bryant is currently a member of the Board of McKesson, a U.S. health care distributor. He also is a director of Columbia Sportswear and Kryptiq.
