Fish-shaped rock swims into NASA photo from Mars

Get out your waders and your favorite flies. UFO fans spotted a very fishy object on the surface of Mars.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

Mars once had an ocean even bigger than the Arctic Ocean here on Earth, but don't let that convince you a fish-shaped rock seen on Mars is really a remnant of past aquatic life on the Red Planet.

NASA shared a raw image online Wednesday from the Curiosity rover's left navigation camera. If you look closely, you can see an object near the bottom center of the image that looks an awful lot like something you would see swimming around in a lake.

The rock's shape and the lighting combined to form a distinctive fish form complete with a finned tail and upturned nose. UFO Sightings Daily, a popular blog that tracks weird shapes on Mars and clouds that look like flying saucers, pointed out the fishy find on Thursday.

We've had all sorts of entertaining sightings on Mars. You might remember the famous face (Elvis, is that you?) or the more recent ancient god "sculpture." A crab-shaped rock also garnered attention in 2015, leading us to wonder how many different types of seafood might be on the menu for our fictional Mars-dwelling, Mesopotamian god-worshiping aliens.

Sometimes NASA feels compelled to respond to rock speculations, as it did with the infamous "thigh bone" discovered in 2014. "Mars likely never had enough oxygen in its atmosphere and elsewhere to support more complex organisms. Thus, large fossils are not likely," NASA explained at the time.

Some UFO fanatics may take this fish sighting very seriously, but we know it's just a coincidental convergence of the right rock with the perfect play of shadows. Or I could be wrong and one day soon we'll receive a desperate message from hungry aliens: "Please, send bread crumbs and a deep fryer!"
