Yahoo-backed voter drive gets 1 million downloads

More than 1 million people have downloaded registration forms as part of a campaign run by Yahoo and Declare Yourself.

More than 1 million people have downloaded voter registration forms as part of a campaign run by Yahoo and Declare Yourself, a nonprofit group, the organizations said Wednesday.

Declare Yourself describes itself as a nonpartisan group committed to motivating young people to vote in next month's presidential election. Yahoo supported the movement, which kicked off Sept. 17, with online ads and contests, the organizations said.

In just the first week of the drive, 100,000 registration forms were downloaded. On Wednesday, Yahoo announced that the 1 million mark had been passed.

"Together with Declare Yourself, we set out to reverse declining voter registration levels among young people, and we're very pleased that we enabled so many Americans to find their voice in the electoral process," Terry Semel, Yahoo's CEO, said in a statement.

Declare Yourself offers many tools on its site, including a page that walks potential voters through the process of registering to vote via mail. The site also offers a tool for finding the addresses of polling places and offers help obtaining an absentee ballot.

The current presidential campaign has witnessed high-pitch online political activity, with both the contenders as well as political bloggers using the Net to spread their views.
