Week ahead: Pocket PC on the launch pad

Microsoft is set to light the fuse of its newest version of the handheld operating system, while Apple plans to reveal a line of speedy new desktop PCs. Plus: Palm, RIM earnings.

Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of June 22.

Microsoft and Apple Computer are set to face off "mano a desktop" on the publicity front. The software giant is expected to unveil the next version of its Pocket PC operating system for handheld computers, while Apple is set to reveal a line of speedy new desktop PCs.

Meanwhile, a new industry group backed by heavyweights such as Intel and Hewlett-Packard will introduce new home networking standards, and portable computing stalwarts Palm and Research In Motion report earnings.

  • Microsoft is set to announce the next version of its handheld operating system, code-named Ozone but formally to be called Pocket PC 2003. The new version of the OS will include features such as built-in support for wireless 802.11 and Bluetooth connections. Hardware partners from the PC world, including Hewlett-Packard and Gateway, are expected to line up with the software giant and introduce new devices using the latest version of the OS.

  • Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to unveil new Macs based on a speedy new PowerPC processor and to discuss Panther, the next version of the Mac OS X operating system, as the company kicks off its Worldwide Developer Conference, June 23 to 27 in San Francisco.
  • Network administrators learn how to make the most of Cisco Systems' technology at the company's Networkers 2003 user conference that runs June 23 to 26 in Orlando, Fla.
  • Database giant Oracle courts European customers at Oracle AppsWorld EMEA, June 23 to 26 in London. Tuesday, June 24
    • The Digital Home Working Group will announce in San Francisco new networking standards it plans to support as it attempts to make it easier for consumers to access and share digital content across PCs, mobile devices and consumer-electronics products. The group consists of 18 major companies from the consumer-electronics, personal computer and mobile devices industries, which intends to push the mainstream adoption of new products that can be networked together. Some of the bigger names include Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Microsoft and Sony.
  • The hospitality industry gets wired at HITEC 2003, June 24 to 26 in New Orleans. Thursday, June 26
      eBay has its annual shareholders meeting in Orlando, Fla.
  • Friday, June 27

    • Video editors, special effects gurus and other entertainment industry tech wizards get to see what's new at Entertainment Technology World, June 27-28 in Los Angeles. Keynote speakers include the original "Nutty Professor," Jerry Lewis.

    • FSI International sells chipmaking equipment. It's expected to report a third-quarter loss of 32 cents a share.

  • Palm sells handheld computers. It's expected to report a third-quarter loss of 94 cents a share.
  • Verity sells portal and e-commerce applications. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 13 cents a share.

    • 3Com sells networking equipment. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 12 cents a share.

  • ATI Technologies makes graphics processors and other PC components. It's expected to report a third-quarter profit of 4 cents a share.

    • Consumer Confidence tracks the results of a broad survey on consumer spending expectations. The June index is expected to rise to 85, from 83.8 the previous month.

    • Home Sales tracks housing activity. May sales of existing homes are expected to dip to 5.8 million, from 5.84 million the previous month. New home sales are expected to hold steady at 1.03 million.

  • Durable Goods measures the value of all goods shipped or ordered with an intended lifespan of three years or more. The May total is expected to show growth of 1 percent, after a 2.4 percent drop the previous month. Thursday, June 26
    • Gross Domestic Product is the broadest measure of overall U.S. economic activity. First-quarter growth is expected to be 1.9 percent, the same as the previous quarter.
  • Friday, June 27

    • Personal Income measures income from all sources. May growth is expected to be 0.3 percent, after a flat April.
