Week ahead: Oracle looks to trim

The database giant's revenue dropped in the first quarter, but the company will try to change course at OracleWorld. Larry Ellison delivers his keynote via satellite from the America's Cup.

Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of Nov. 10.

Oracle has hit a rough spot recently, with revenue 10 percent in the first quarter and expectations of continued weakness in the second. But the database giant hopes to the troops next week at OracleWorld. Oracle's Chief Executive, Larry Ellison, plans to deliver his keynote address via satellite from the America's Cup sailing race in New Zealand. Meanwhile, Dell Computer plans to have some news of its own. The PC maker, which recently bumped up its revenue , will roll out its third-quarter results.

  • Thursday, Nov. 14

    • Export Prices and Import Prices track changes in average prices for nonpetroleum and nonagricultural goods and provide an early clue to shifts in trade balance. No forecast for October figures was available.

  • Initial Claims is the weekly total of new claims filed for unemployment compensation. No forecast for the week ending Nov. 9 was available.
  • Retail Sales measures total receipts from U.S. stores. Growth for October is expected to drop to 0.1 percent, from a decline of 1.2 percent the previous month. Excluding auto sales, growth is expected to be flat, at 0.2 percent. Friday, Nov. 15
    • Business Inventories summarizes total sales and inventory for the retail, wholesale and manufacturing sectors. September growth is expected to remain flat at zero percent, compared with a 0.1 percent decline.
  • Producer Price Index is a broad measure of the price of goods at the wholesale level. October growth is expected to be 0.3 percent, after a 0.1 percent drop in September.
