AOL laid off more than 450 employees on Wednesday, concluding the bulk of the 5,000-employee workforce reduction the company had announced last summer, AOL spokesman Andrew Weinstein said.
About 450 of the layoffs were in in AOL's now defunct Internet access business at the Dulles, Va., headquarters, he said. There were an unspecified number of additional layoffs in Tucson, Arizona, and Columbus, Ohio, but the majority of the layoffs were in Dulles, he said.
The company has closed or sold four call centers and sold off its European Internet access business since moving to an ad-supported business model from a subscription model in August.
AOL now has about 14,000 employees worldwide, Weinstein said.
