Unisys has inked a deal to provide on-site service for Ascend Communications' networking gear.

Under the terms of the contract, Unisys will provide worldwide on-site global service for Ascend's entire line of wide-area networking products.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Unisys, a $7 billion provider of computer hardware and systems, is relying increasingly on its services unit to drive revenues. For fiscal year 1998, the company is expected to derive nearly half of its revenues from services and consulting, analysts said.

The company said the Ascend deal expands on an existing partnership, signed in 1996. Ascend gains round-the-clock technical response, in as little as two hours, for all of its products sold in 51 countries.

Unisys engineers will also be available to test and install Ascend WAN switching and remote access products. The company will also handle inventory and logistics management services to deliver both parts and field engineers worldwide.
