Unisys takes old path

Following other vendors in a well-worn path, Unisys (UIS) has added a new model to the line of ClearPath SMP and HMP servers that supports up to four Pentium Pro processors.

Unisys is positioning the SMP 6400 as a midrange server configurable with up to four Pentium Pro processors running at 166 MHz or 200 MHz on a single board. The SMP 6400 is based on Intel's Orion chipset and is available with up to 24GB hard disk storage, internal RAID, and clustering capability.

Operating systems that can be installed include Windows NT 3.51 or higher, SCO Unixware 2.1, or Unisys SVR4/MP v1.4.

A base configuration with a single 166-MHz Pentium Pro processor, 4GB hard drive, and 32MB of memory is priced at $13,500 and includes a Unix license for four users. A fully optioned model with four 200-MHz Pentium Pros, 24GB of hard disk space, and Unix license for an unlimited number of users goes for $55,000.

Unisys says the SMP 6400 is available for shipment, with each system configured to the user's order.
