Sun Microsystems has upgraded the hard drives in its midrange StorEdge 3900 and 6900 series storage systems, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company said Wednesday. The systems now can accommodate either larger 181GB drives, which brings the total system capacity from 11 terabytes to 29TB, or with high-speed 36GB drives, which reduces the time for reading or writing data.

Sun has sold more than 700 terabytes worth of capacity for the systems since their initial launch five months ago, the company said. The 3900 costs between $78,000 and $172,000, while the 6900 costs between $105,000 and $251,000.
