Publishing software provider Quark may have found itself spurned in one recent deal, but it has landed another without missing a beat.

Quark and Sun Microsystems today announced a joint marketing agreement designed to promote the use of Quark products on Sun's enterprise servers and Solaris operating system.

The announcement comes just after Quark tried to enlarge its market share by making a play for its much larger competitor, Adobe, which rejected its offer.

Last week, Quark said it had offered to buy Adobe at a premium to its stock price, but industry analysts question where Quark would have found the funds to pay in excess of $1.8 billion for the software company, based on its market value.

Meanwhile, Sun is looking to keep a hold on content creators, who are increasingly buying competing workstations that run on Microsoft's Windows NT operating systems.

Under the agreement, the companies will conduct joint marketing and sales efforts, as well as offer technical training and support. In addition, the companies will target the publishing and digital content provider markets.

Shares of Sun were up in late morning trading, as were the markets overall. Quark is privately held.
