Sun offers new Java toolkit
Sun releases Java software tools for writing collaborative applets and applications such as chat rooms, shared whiteboards, and stock tickers.
Called Java Shared Data Toolkit, the new developer tools also can be used for remote presentations and group workflow applications.
The new toolkit complements Sun's other Java multimedia technologies. Sun said it will save developers time and money in creating collaborative software that lets users share information over networks even if they use different operating systems.
Java Shared Data Toolkit includes four sample applications: a chat environment, a shared whiteboard that lets users sketch diagrams, a stock quote viewer with continuous updates, and a sound server for shared audio in presentations.
Sun said the new software meets its 100 percent Pure Java certification standards and can be used on any platform that supports the Java Development Kit 1.1.
The new toolkit, which can be downloaded from Sun's Web site, is priced at $99 for one copy, with source licenses also available.
