Stocks calm in early trading
With little economic news to guide the market, stocks are mostly flat or slightly higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped as much as 33.99 points earlier but was up 2.06 points to 9,018.2. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index edged 8.9 points higher to 2,012.06.
"There's no negative economic news out there," said Doug Myers, vice president at Interstate/Johnson Lane. "It's one of those things--no bad news, buy a little stock.''
Most top technology movers on the Nasdaq market today were only inching higher in early trading. Intel rose 0.38 percent, Dell Computer climbed 0.76 percent, and Microsoft edged 0.39 percent higher.
MCI-WorldCom rose 1.52 percent while Cisco System climbed 0.32 percent.
On the big board, Compaq Computer surged 3.07 percent, Lucent Technologies climbed 1.5 percent, and America Online inched 0.5 percent higher.
