Short Take: Lucent spins off unit

Lucent Technologies has spun off its fingerprint authentication technology into a separate company, Veridicom. The company is a joint-venture with U.S. Venture Partners and Lucent, with Tom Rowley, a veteran of early-stage companies, serving as its president. The authorization technology is designed for such products as networked computers and automobiles.
