Microsoft is expected to name Steve Sinofsky, a senior vice president currently running the company's Office division, to oversee its Windows division, the Wall Street Journal reported. The paper, quoting sources close to the company, said the move should come this week.

On Tuesday, Microsoft announced it was delaying the release of its new Vista operating system and will make it available to volume-licensing customers in November. But that delay could mean that consumers won't be able to get new PCs running the operating system until next year.

Sinofsky has been with Microsoft since 1989. The Platform Products and Services Division, which includes Windows, is currently run by Jim Allchin and Kevin Johnson. Allchin last year announced plans to retire at the end of 2006, following the commercial availability of Vista.
