Rational Software is shipping a tool to let software developers pinpoint gaps in the testing of new software.

The company said Visual PureCoverage analyzes Windows NT applications written using Visual Basic, Visual C++, or Java. The goal is to find areas of applications that have slipped through the code testing process, so that developers or quality assurance engineers can rework testing procedures.

The tool also lets users specify the level and detail of data collected from application testing and allows them to focus on the most important parts of applications.

Rational said the display of information presented by the tool can also be customized, and users can create specific test cases based on analysis results.

Technology included in Visual PureCoverage can analyze entire applications, including components with or without source code, the company said.

The tool is licensed on a subscription basis, starting at $748 per year. It runs on Windows NT and can analyze applications built with Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 and above, Visual C++ 2.2 and above, and Java from any Java SDK using the Microsoft Virtual Machine for Java.
