Get GiliSoft Private Disk (Win) for free

Encrypt and password-protect your files and folders with this powerful tool, which normally runs $39.95.

Let's talk security. Regular Cheapskate readers know that I'm averse to third-party security software, at least when it comes to antivirus, antimalware, and so on. But I do realize that someone could steal my laptop and then gain access to some critical files: tax returns, bank records, proprietary company documents, and so on.

One great way to keep files and folders safe is to encrypt them. For a long time, TrueCrypt was the go-to open-source (read: free) encryption tool -- but earlier this year, the developers warned users to abandon the software due to "unfixed security issues."

All is not lost. For a limited time, SharewareOnSale has GiliSoft Private Disk 6.3 (Win) for free. Regular price: $39.95.

True to its name, Private Disk creates encrypted, password-protected virtual disks you can use to store critical data. Think of them as digital file cabinets with military-grade locks (in this case, 256-bit AES encryption). These can be created not only on your hard drive, but also your flash drives -- you know, the ones that always seem to go missing.

The giveaway nets you a lifetime license that's good for one computer. If you want tech support and/or software updates, however, you'll have to pony up for a paid version. (Incidentally, SharewareOnSale also has the full GiliSoft Encryption Toolkit Suite -- with lifetime updates -- for $19.99, regularly $279.99.)

Note that you must download, install, and register the program before the giveaway ends (midnight tomorrow), otherwise you'll end up with just the trial version. Click the big blue "Download It Now!" button and follow the instructions from there.

For anyone cast adrift by TrueCrypt or just thinking they should be doing a better job (or just "a job") protecting important files, this is a utility worth grabbing.

Bonus deal: Got 'phones? Today only, and while supplies last, Amazon is offering its house-brand Premium Headphones for $9.99. Shipping is free for Prime customers or if you pad your cart to at least $35. These tangle-resistant black earphones were designed with the Fire phone in mind, but they'll work anywhere. Features include magnetic earbuds that snap together when not in use, a flat cable with inline mic and control buttons, and mostly positive user reviews.
