Watch this: eBay asks users to change passwords after hack
In this episode of CNET Update, we play CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD! It's the hot new cybersecurity game show where we all lose. Today's contestant is one of the largest online retailers in the world, eBay. Nearly 150 million lucky eBay users need to reset their password because of a hack that exposed personal data including names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. The breach happened about three months ago, but we're only getting the warning now.
Since you can't trust any site -- even one as big as eBay -- be sure to use different passwords for multiple accounts. That way, if hackers get the keys to one account, it doesn't unlock others. You can also give yourself an extra layer of protection with a service like LastPass. (Consider it our parting gift to you for playing along.)
And in other news, Facebook is updating its app to listen for and identify TV shows and music playing nearby. Why stress out about our current cybersecurity crisis when you can share a Beyoncé song with Facebook friends?
CNET Update delivers the tech news you need in under three minutes. Watch Bridget Carey every afternoon for a breakdown of the big stories, hot devices, new apps, and what's ahead. Subscribe to the podcast via the links below.
