PC shipments up slightly in Asia

PC shipments in the Asia Pacific region increased by 12.5 percent in the second quarter over the same period last year, according to a new report from Gartner. China Legend was once again No. 1 with 12 percent market share, followed by IBM and LG Electronics-IBM as No. 2. Compaq Computer and Samsung were No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Dell Computer entered the top five for the first time, edging out Hewlett-Packard. About 4.8 million PCs shipped during the quarter across the region, which excludes figures for Japan. Growth over the previous quarter was 3.6 percent. Meanwhile, Japan's domestic shipments of PCs rose 2 percent in the quarter from a year earlier to 2.79 million units, an industry group said.
