PageMill schedule hits snag

Adobe Systems (ADBE) is pushing back the release of PageMill 2.0 by a month, CNET has learned.

The Macintosh version of the Web publishing tool was scheduled to roll out this month with the Windows version coming in October, according to a posting on the company's Web site. But refinement of the new user interface, which will allow Web designers to resize table cells and frames by dragging edges instead of clicking through a series of dialog boxes, has taken longer than expected, according to product manager Sean McKenna. The final Mac version will now be released in October followed by the Windows version in November.

A public beta of PageMill 2.0 for Macintosh has been available since August 7, and the company plans to post a new Mac version next week. The new version will include the drag-to-resize feature, background color for table cells, and the ability to launch a browser on the desktop when an external link is clicked within the editor. The program will also estimate download times of pages at various connection speeds, McKenna said.

The beta for Windows 95 and NT should be available in three to four weeks.

Both Windows and Macintosh versions will have a street price of $99, with an upgrade from version 1.0 costing $49.
