Notebook drive sizes climbing

CMS Peripherals introduces a 5.1GB hard drive upgrade for business users who are using their notebooks as a desktop replacement.

CMS Peripherals introduced a high-capacity, 5.1GB hard drive upgrade for notebook computers, one of the largest yet to be offered for portable machines.

The 5.1GB Easy-Plug Easy-Go internal hard drive will be available as an upgrade drive for the Compaq Armada 7700 series; the Dell Latitude XP and XPi series; the IBM ThinkPad 355, 360, 370, 380, 700, 750, 755, 760, 765, and 770 series; the Toshiba Tecra 500 and 700 series.

According to CMS, the high-capacity drive is designed for business users who are using their notebooks as a desktop replacement and therefore need similar storage capacity.

CMS specifically points to Internet downloads as one of the prime uses of storage space on the hard drive. Other reasons for large-capacity hard drives are multimedia content such as audio and video, large business applications, and massive files used with scientific and engineering applications.

The drive will be available within the month, at a list price of $1,259. It is covered by a three-year warranty.
