NetWare for Small Business ships

Novell's package also includes email, Web serving, fax, back-up, and antivirus programs from third parties.

The battle for small business software dollars continues to heat up.

Novell (NOVL) announced shipment of a version of its NetWare operating system tailored to the needs of small installations. Included in the package are email, Web serving, fax, back-up, and antivirus programs from third parties.

Rival Microsoft has started to shape its server-based software applications for certain solutions-driven market segments. In an acknowledgment of that company's ability to leverage its various products, Novell will also bundle a version of Oracle's Oracle8 database within 45 days.

Novell executives have hyped the small business bundle upgrade as a revenue generator for the firm.

The package includes NetWare 4.11, Novell's GroupWise 5.2 email and collaboration tool, Netscape Communications' FastTrack Web server, and fax, back-up, and antivirus software from Computer Associates.

The collection of software is intended to offer a simple way for small businesses to be networked. Novell's package includes easy-to-use installation and administration tools that are intended to take the complexity out of software, according to the company.

NetWare for Small Business will be sold on a per-user basis, with a five-user package priced at $995 and additional users costing $65 apiece.
