Motorola announced Thursday that it has won a $4.26 billion judgment against the Uzan family of Turkey, after a judge found that the Uzan-controlled Telsim Mobil Telekomunikasyon Hizmetleri company engaged in fraud.
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that Uzan family members acted fraudulently when they routed $1.8 billion in funds--loaned by Motorola to Telsim Mobil--for personal use or to other companies they controlled. The court ordered the Uzan family members and companies they control to pay $2.13 billion in compensatory damages to Motorola and another $2.13 billion in punitive damages. The Uzan family could not be reached immediately for comment.
