Monster lists volunteer jobs

New section on the job-search Web site lets people look for volunteer opportunities by interest and location.

Online career company Monster on Wednesday launched a volunteer section on its jobs site.

The new channel is designed to help connect users interested in volunteer work with nonprofit organizations, the company said. Volunteer vacancies can be searched by interest and location.

The company has partnered with and BoardnetUSA, two volunteer opportunities sites, for the new offering.

Monster said a recent poll showed that 66 percent of its users planned to seek volunteer opportunities in 2005. In a similar poll last year, 54 percent of users said they did volunteer work during the year. Nearly 1.8 million nonprofit board seats turn over each year in the United States, it said.

"The recent events in Asia have drawn significant attention to the need for, and importance of, volunteering," Marcel Legrand, Monster's senior vice president of strategy and planning, said in a statement, referring to the catastrophic tsunami in the Indian Ocean. "And recent Monster polls suggest that a majority of our users will be looking for volunteer opportunities in the new year."

Volunteer jobs listed in the new section cannot be viewed from the general job search area.
