Microsoft to fix printing glitch

Microsoft is working to fix a longtime problem in its Office desktop software suite that prevents users from printing certain documents.

Microsoft (MSFT) is working to fix a longtime problem in its Office desktop software suite that prevents users from printing certain documents, the company confirmed today.

First discovered in Office 95, the problem also affects Office 97 users. Microsoft has been working on a fix for some time, a representative said, and has posted a workaround to its Office support Web site.

Last fall, Microsoft said the problem, which is rooted in the company's Binder application shipped with Office, would be fixed in Office 97. That has not happened, and a company representative said a fix is planned for the next version of the suite, due for beta testing next quarter.

The problem occurs when attempting to print Excel worksheets in Binder. Instead of just select worksheets, all sheets in the section that contain data are printed. Also, hidden sheets in the Microsoft Excel section are printed. The selected sheets show up correctly in the Binder Print Preview before printing, but are not printed correctly.

"This is very annoying if you have worksheets with formulas or other contents in them, in the same workbook and you don't want these printed," Office user Brad Strickland said in an email to CNET'S NEWS.COM.

The workaround allows users to print the Excel section separately from other sections in the binder, according to Microsoft.
