Market Close: Investors content to stand pat

Technology stocks ended a volatile week with mixed results Friday as the Nasdaq composite closed off 1 point to 2,552.65. The Dow Jones industrial average added 18 points to close at 10,552.56 in light trading.

With next week's Federal Reserve Board meeting preoccupying investors' minds, substantial moves in either direction were few and far between.

"Some people are taking profits from the recent gains as they came off their lows," said Peter Coolidge, senior equities trader at Brean Murray & Co.

Perhaps the biggest news on the technology-stock front came from Juniper Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR). The stock soared 64 7/8 to 98 7/8 in its initial public offering. The network-equipment maker is considered a threat to the likes of Cisco and Ascend Communications.

Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) shares closed up 1 1/16 to 61 5/16. Ascend Communications Inc. (ASND) closed unchanged at 105 3/8 and Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) closed off 1/2 to 63 1/2. 3Com Corp. (COMS) picked up 9/16 to 27 1/16.

Juno Online Services Inc. (JWEB) gained 3 15/16 to 26 1/8 on talk it could be a takeover target.

Internet stocks closed mostly lower Friday.

Amazon.com (AMZN) lost 3 7/16 to 110 3/16 after announcing it had named Joseph Galli as its president and chief operating officer. America Online Inc. (AOL) fell 3 7/8 to 102 7/8 on news it was expanding to the Far East, and in talks with low-cost personal computer maker MicroWorkz.

Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) dropped 4 to 146 7/8 while Excite At Home Corp. (ATHM) shed 1 1/2 to 51 1/2 and Lycos Inc. (LCOS) shed 3 5/8 to 91 13/16. Infoseek Corp. (SEEK) closed off 3/4 to 45 7/16.

Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) plunged 1 3/16 to 36 15/16 while Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) and Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) lost 3/8 and 1/8 a share, respectively. Gateway Inc. (GTW) fell 1 5/8 to 61.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) picked up 5/16 to 84 15/16. Oracle Corp. (ORCL) inched up 1/16 to 35 3/4 and Sun Microsystems Inc. (SUNW) tacked on 5/16 to close at 64 7/8.

Intel Corp. (INTC) rose ? to 55 5/16. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) moved up 3/16 to 17 1/4 and IBM Corp. (IBM) closed up 9/16 to 123 1/8.
