Macromedia announced a new tool for its multimedia authoring software that supports Intel's MMX microprocessor technology.

The new Director Xtra, an add-on to the Director 5 multimedia authoring tool, will improve multimedia and animation playback by up to 50 percent, according to Macromedia (MACR).

Intel chips is expected to debut the multimedia MMX technology by March of 1997. Several microprocessor vendors such as Cyrix have indicated they will clone the MMX technology, a sign that the market for multimedia software could blossom rapidly.

The multimedia Director Xtra with MMX technology is available immediately for Macromedia beta users. Director Xtra will be available free of charge at Macromedia's Web site later this year.
