Mac Pro, MacBook Pro to get big refresh this week, says report

Apple is set to reveal new flavors of the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro at this week's WWDC, sources tell 9to5Mac.

Apple is expected to bump up its Mac Pro and MacBook Pro lineups with beefier processors and more memory.

On the receiving end of "detailed information from reliable sources," 9to5Mac says that Apple will unveil three new editions of the Mac Pro at its Worldwide Developers Conference this week.

The first standard model will offer a 3.2GHz quad-core processor, 6GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, and an ATI Radeon 5770 graphics chip, while the second one will sport a 2.4GHz 12-core processor and 12GB of RAM with the same size hard drive and graphics chip. The server edition will kick off with a 3.2GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and two 1TB hard drives.

The current standard Mac Pros offer anywhere from a 2.4GHz to a 2.8GHz processor with up to 6GB of memory, while the server model includes a 2.8GHz chip with 8GB of memory.

This latest hint comes on top of reports that consumers eyeing a current Mac Pro are facing extremely long wait times to buy one at Apple retail stores. The Mac Pro lineup received its last major refresh in July of 2010.

And what about the MacBook Pros?

Apple is likely to unveil "next-generation" MacBook Pros with a Retina Display and thinner design and also launch new models based on the current design but with better specs, says 9to5Mac.

The next-gen edition will display a 15.4-inch screen, while the new models with the current design will be offered in both 13.3-inch and 15.4-inch versions.

The 13.3-inch model, according to the report, will come in two varieties -- one with a 2.5GHz dual core processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, and the other with a 2.9GHz dual core processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB hard drive.

Likewise, the 15.4 incher will offer customers two choices -- one with a 2.3GHz quad core processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, and the other with a 2.6GHz quad core processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB hard drive. This last model can be built to order by bumping up the processor to a 2.7GHz quad core chip and a 1TB hard drive.

Some of these specs, especially the Retina Display, match those expected by analysts and industry watchers. We should soon learn the actual specs of the new Mac lineups as WWDC gets off the ground starting today.
