Sun Microsystems and Laszlo systems on Tuesday announced that they will be submitting technology to an open source development tool project for writing Java applications for mobile devices.

The project, code-named Orbit, will create software that will let programmers use OpenLaszlo to generate Java platform, Micro Edition (Java 2 ME) applications, which run on cell phones and other handheld devices.

OpenLaszlo is open-source software for building rich Internet applications displayed in Web browsers with AJAX-style techniques or Adobe Flash.
