Kaventsmann Triggerfish watch can take 4.5kg of C4 explosive

A new timepiece by watchmaker Kaventsmann gives an entirely new meaning to the word "rugged".

If you're the type of person who regularly goes diving three kilometres below the surface or gets caught in massive explosions, then the Kaventsmann Triggerfish Bronze A2 is the watch for you. The hyper-rugged timepiece is the toughest we've seen yet.

Constructed of CuSn8 bronze, the watch boasts a super-heavy-duty 10mm polycarbonate crystal and a quadruple-sealed crown. At 45x55x20mm, it's got some heft to it as well, and ticking away inside is the automatic-winding, 21-jewel Swiss ETA 2892.A2 movement. The dial is pantone dark green, with superluminova-coated hands and numeral markers.

As for that toughness? It has it in spades. The prototype watch was designed as a commission for the US Special Forces Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Not only is it water resistant to 300 bar of pressure (roughly 3000 metres), it has successfully survived being blown up by 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) of C4 explosive, coming out with a scratch crystal, one detached strap and the movement a little bit shocked — something maker Michael Fernandez is working on fixing.

Since Fernandez owns and operates the Kaventsmann Berlin manufacture on his own, the watch is of necessity, a very limited release — just 30 watches will be made available.
