Intel links PCs, support software

Intel releases software to more easily link PCs to corporate help-desk software.

Chip giant Intel (INTC) announced a new software module that will allow support personnel to extract information from desktops when users call with a problem, a key element in an industrywide effort to reduce the costs associated with PCs.

The new Desktop Integrator Technology allows the integration of desktop management analysis tools with help-desk applications like those made by Vantive or Remedy, for example.

The unveiling of the new module coincides with the opening of the Support Services Conference and Expo trade show in San Jose, California, this week.

Desktop management suites supporting the new software hooks include Intel's own LANDesk management suite, ManageWise from Novell, and Microsoft's Systems Management Server.

Intel launched a Wired for Management initiative last fall in the hopes of reducing the cost of ownership of a PC. The issue remains a sticking point due to the administrative costs associated with keeping PC software up to date and minimizing human error and confusion with the machines.
