Intel, AMD trade market gains and losses

Intel's market share fell three-tenths of a point from 81.9 percent during the second quarter of 2002 to 81.6 percent in the same period of 2003, according to a new report released this week by IDC. At the same time, Advanced Micro Devices picked up four-tenths of a point, rising from 16.8 percent in the second quarter of 2002 to 17.2 percent during the second quarter of 2003.

Despite the year-over-year decrease, Intel bucked normal trends by gaining market share sequentially. It increased share from 80.4 percent during the first quarter to 81.6 percent in the second quarter. Meanwhile, AMD's share declined from 18.3 percent during the first quarter to 17.2 percent in the second quarter. Several new processor models fueled Intel's gain, IDC said. IDC's figures do not include chips sold for Microsoft's Xbox game console or other non-PC devices that might use a PC processor.
