Informix opens Web-ready toolbox
Informix ships development toolkits designed to support multimedia and Web-based data for its next-generation database server.
The company shipped an early release version of a development kit for its Universal Server database, along with tools for building custom data modules called DataBlades.
Universal Server combines Informix's existing relational database technology with multimedia and object data storage features included in the Illustra Server database, which it acquired earlier this year. Both Universal Server and the development kit are scheduled to ship by year's end.
The updated DataBlade toolkit lets IS developers and third-party software makers build custom software modules that add new data type support to the Universal Server database. DataBlades allow the database to host document management services, data warehouse applications, and Web and intranet-related applications.
The updated toolkit is the first targeted specifically at developers building DataBlades for Universal Server, not for Illustra Server.
The full release of Universal Server is expected by year's end on Unix systems and in the first quarter of next year on Windows NT. Pricing has not been announced for either development kit, or for Universal Server.
