IBM wants to make its mark on printers

IBM isn't losing any time getting back into the PC printer business.

Reaching the end of its five-year agreement not to compete with Lexmark International, a former unit of IBM that spun off in 1991, IBM is not losing any time getting back into the PC printer business.

IBM discontinued its laser printer line five years ago as part of a promise to help Lexmark establish itself in the industry. But the deal expired in March, and Big Blue today made its presence known again in the market with the introduction of five laser printers, according to Bloomberg news service.

The series includes one high-end color printer and three black-and-white versions, all four aimed at business users. The printers will offer print speeds of 12, 17, and 24 pages a minute, according to the report.

The printers will be available through IBM PC resellers, but the company has not yet disclosed pricing or availability.
