Group expands USB standard

An industry group announced on Tuesday the release of a supplement to the USB standard that will enable devices to communicate directly with one other without the intervention of a PC. USB On-the-Go could allow an MP3 player to directly transfer music files to another player or allow a digital camera to link directly to a printer, according to the Universal Serial Bus Implementers Forum, an industry group formed to advance the USB standard for connecting PC peripherals and electronics devices. The USB Web site offers technical information on USB On-the-Go and details on upcoming forums for device makers looking to use the new standard.
