GM expands portal to more employees

General Motors launched an expanded employee portal on Monday, billing "MySocrates" as one of the world's largest business-to-employee projects. About 180,000 hourly and salaried workers in the United States can access the private site's 4 million pages, which allow workers to take online courses, make address or health benefits changes, and read news bulletins. The launch of MySocrates comes one year after GM announced it would subsidize Internet access through America Online to improve employee communications and reduce paperwork. Detroit-based GM estimates that paper-based or face-to-face transactions between workers and the human resources representatives cost up to $2 each. Providing similar transactions on the Web costs less than 5 cents per minute.
