Ex-NBA star pleads guilty to $15,000 Apple store theft

Last year, former University of Kentucky and NBA star Rex Chapman was accused of stealing around $15,000 worth of items from an Apple store in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Now, he has reportedly pleaded guilty to four felony counts of theft. The Lexington Herald-Leader said his plea-bargained sentence will include 750 hours of community service, as well as probation.

The accusations were that on seven occasions Chapman had walked into the Apple Store and acted as if he was using the self-checkout service. Instead, he allegedly left without paying and sold the items at a pawnshop for $5,460.

As part of his plea bargain Chapman reportedly agreed to pay back $15,128.30 to the Apple Store. His sentencing hearing is set for September 25.

In July, Chapman told Sports Illustrated that he didn't remember much about the alleged shoplifting. He said his mind had been fogged up, mainly by years of using prescription medications, an addiction to which had previously forced him to go to rehab.

Indeed, shortly after he was arrested, with the Apple Store's surveillance cameras catching him in the alleged act, he reportedly entered another 28-day period of rehab.

Chapman spent 13 years in the NBA, playing for such teams as the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns.
