Six professors performing research on, among other topics, fluid-filled lenses for cell phones, better and video instant messaging for wireless networks, received $50,000 grants Wednesday from the William J. von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism and Technology Advancement at the University of California, San Diego.

The center seeks to identify lab projects with strong commercial potential. Fluidic lenses, for instance, could help improve resolution on camera phones as the gains from cramming more pixels peters out.
