'Firefly' stars and galaxy of cult heroes get meta in 'Con Man' trailer
The tragic life of a former cult TV star is the comic subject of the new show starring Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion, former cult TV stars.
How meta is this: the first trailer for "Con Man", the fictional story of a former sci-fi TV star attending fan conventions starring various former sci-fi TV stars has been unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con fan convention.
"Con Man" features Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion playing actors who appeared in made-up cult science fiction show "Spectrum". The joke is that Tudyk and Fillion starred together in real-life cult science fiction show "Firefly". Tudyk writes and directs the comedy, which was crowdfunded through a successful Indiegogo campaign.
Sci-fi/western mash-up "Firefly" was created by "Avengers" director Joss Whedon and established a passionate audience, but only ran for fourteen episodes beginning in 2002. Spawning a spin-off movie "Serenity" in 2005, the show has become a byword for TV programmes that were cancelled unfairly.
Since appearing in "Firefly", Tudyk has popped up in "Arrested Development", "Suburgatory" and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
His fellow "Firefly" cast members Summer Glau, Jewel Staite and Gina Torres appear in "Con Man" too. The show also includes features from cult heroes and fan favourites including including Seth Green, Will Wheaton, Sean Astin, Trisha Helfer, Michael Dorn, Milo Ventimiglia and Felicia Day -- not to mention the man himself Joss Whedon.
